Description

The University of Toronto is seeking responses to this RFP from pre-qualified Architects for professional services related to the design and construction of the Physics Collaborative Research and Learning Centre at the St. George campus. The proposed revitalisation of this existing space will transform the student learning experience, enabling it to serve as a hub of research, collaboration, and learning in the Department of Physics for both undergraduate and graduate students and faculty.

The goal of this project is to create an unified space allowing for a designated area that incorporates teaching and instruction, research and research materials, as well as individual study and collaborative study areas, with the goal of enhancing the learning and studying experience for students. Integrating collaborative areas into the existing library would create a unique environment in the Department.
Design considerations for successful learning space:

flexible, to adapt to current and evolving needs
creative, to energize and inspire
future-proofed, to enable the space to be reconfigured as pedagogies change
supportive, to develop the potential of different types of learners, and
enterprising, with each space capable of supporting different purposes.

The proposed new library retains the traditional elements of the Physics Library, including quiet study space and access to information and resources. It adds a variety of elements, including separate bookable study rooms, freestanding white/blackboards, and modernized computer facilities. Different configurations of tables and chairs will encourage and enhance interaction and collaboration. The new library is intended to play a central role in the Departmental community, providing a learning environment currently unavailable in the Physics building.
