The SMDHU is seeking the services of a consultant to plan and implement a feasibility study that will explore the perspectives of the local drug and substance-using community, other community members and key stakeholders on the acceptability, feasibility, and preferences for Supervised Consumption Sites (SCS). The feasibility study will also include secondary data sources that will help to illustrate the health, health service and social impacts of drug use in the Simcoe Muskoka area. This feasibility study will identify key considerations for supervised consumption services in Simcoe Muskoka. The study findings will inform discussions concerning the need for, and feasibility of, supervised consumption services in the communities most affected by the opioid crisis to date including Barrie, Orillia and Midland within the County of Simcoe.
The feasibility study is being conducted on behalf of the Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy (SMOS), a multi-sector collaboration to address the harms of opioids in Simcoe and Muskoka. In the SMOS Report ‘An Action Plan for Our Communities’, the Harm Reduction Pillar of SMOS has identified one of their goals as increasing access to overdose prevention sites (OPS) and supervised consumption sites (SCS) in the region.
