T_18754 - Project: tender_18754 - Computerized Cognitive Skills Training for Commercial and Beginner Drivers

Traditional driver education and training programs focus on teaching an individual the basic tasks of vehicle operation in a safe and effective manner under normal driving circumstances. Evaluations of these programs, including within Ontario, have typically found that program completers do not subsequently show lower motor vehicle collision causation when compared to non-completers. Many motor vehicle collisions are caused by unanticipated and/or unique circumstances that would be difficult or dangerous to reproduce for educational purposes on public roads, or even in controlled settings. Several evidence-based computerized cognitive skills training programs, which include a focus on attention maintenance, hazard perception and hazard mitigation, can be delivered in relatively short periods of time via a desktop computer or video presentation and may be highly cost-effective. The Ministry is interested in learning more about how these programs could be adapted to the Ontario environment for both novice passenger vehicle and novice heavy commercial motor vehicle drivers.
