Statement of Requirements
The University of Ottawa is pleased to invite qualified Proponents to submit a proposal for the three-dimensional Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system to be housed in the Hydraulics Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department in STEM building.
The University’s budget for the system, including warranty, installation and training, is $144,000 CAD before tax. The budget is provided as a reference, the University reserves the right to award a contract at a lower or higher price.
Scope of Project
The 3D-PIV system will be used to study the three-dimensional distribution of the velocity in a flume containing different types of currents and jets. It is necessary to have a zone of measurement of at least 5cm*5cm*5cm with a velocity of up to 0.7 m/s and allowable error of 0.001 m/s. It will be used for three-dimensional volumetric velocity field measurements with a frequency of at least 500 Hz. The PIV system must also be capable of 2D velocity measurements in a plane with a zone of at least 40cm*40cm with a velocity of up to 1 m/s and allowable error of 0.001 m/s, so it is necessary for the laser system to produce the required laser illuminations for both two and three-dimensional measurements.
The velocity measurement output should be available on grids with maximum sizes of 2mm in three dimensional measurements and 5mm in two dimensional measurements.
General Description of Instrument, System or Service
The 3D-PIV system must have the required parts to measure the volumetric velocity fields in a flume. Some of these parts are:
- Volumetric illumination system for 3-D Tomographic PIV measurements as well as laser sheet illumination for 2-D-PIV system. The laser should be suitable for illuminating the areas specified in the Scope of Project.
- Camera system including necessary lenses with a focal length of 50 mm. High-speed camera covering the specified area with enough resolution at a frequency of at least 500 Hz, with lenses, with appropriate focal length, as well as appropriate camera lens filter and adapter.
- Appropriate rail mount or tripod for 3-D tomographic, stereo and 2-D PIV.
- Appropriate software for data processing with up-to-date algorithms to filter, calibrate, analyze and correlate the data for 3-D tomographic, stereo and 2-D PIV systems with required calibration targets.
- Articulating light delivery arm
- Other necessary items for the operation of the PIV system.
It is desirable that the system can also be used for laser-induced fluorescence applications (LIF). If LIF software isn’t available, the camera and laser system is still required to allow compatibility with a LIF application (if created in-house, etc)
Other desirable items (options) include:
- Necessary workstation to support measurements. The recommended specs are:
32Gb RAM
4Tb Hard drive
Appropriate graphic cards
- Software for LIF analysis
- Higher frequency up to 1000 Hz
- GPU-enabled software
- Higher pixel density camera
- AI-enabled software
- Pressure measurement capability
- Tomographic measurement over a volume of 10cm*10cm*10cm
Items to be priced as options in Appendix G – Price Schedule Form, part “B) Options” include:
- Additional lenses with focal lengths of 200
