The University of Ottawa is pleased to invite qualified proponents to submit a proposal for a Quantum Magnetometer System.
Scope of Project:
The University of Ottawa solicits a Scanning Probe Quantum Magnetometer based on Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) defects in diamond that is able to map magnetic fields down to tens of nanometres resoltuion.
General Description:
The required instrumentation is a scanning probe microscope able to detect magnetic signals from a materials with high spatial resolution. The principle of operation of this microscope is a quantum sensor represented by a nitrogen vacancy (NV) defects in diamond. This information about a material can help us answer fundamental questions about the properties of novel quantum materials. In particular, we are interested in studying layered 2D magnetic materials and heterstructures that we fabricate at uOttwa.
Magnetism in low-dimensional 2D structures has been a subject of theoretical interest for decades. Open questions such as the size of magnetic domains, the nature of domain boundaries, and the dynamical behaviour of magnetization under externally applied fields are of interests. This will enable quantitative comparison with theoretical models, advancing our understanding of condensed quantum matter. Furthermore, the required instrumentation is perfectly suited to reveal the unknown connections between crystal structure and magnetism, as understanding magnetization, and developing methods for its control, requires spatial mapping of the magnetic field at a variety of length scales.
