Background and Purpose

McMaster University and the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM), has a requirement to renew and upgrade its field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) and focused ion beam SEM (FIB-SEM) systems. The CCEM is the national facility for electron microscopy and is committed to provide its user base with accessible specialized electron microscopy services, one of which is access to updated equipment and instrumentation SEM, FIB-SEM, and related spectroscopy – both as analysis endpoints as well as to act as screening / feeder microscopes or sample preparation pathways to more advanced environmental SEM (ESEM) or transmission electron microscope (TEM) instruments. This system renewal and upgrade package is to include:

1. 1. a new field emission SEM with variable pressure / low vacuum imaging modes;
  2. detectors for energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) for the new SEM;
  3. a system upgrade for the Thermo Fisher Scientific Helios G4 plasma FIB-SEM currently at CCEM to the latest Helios 5 generation;
  4. service support and consumables for the new SEM and Helios 5 FIB-SEM.

The Apreo 2S LoVac by Thermo Fisher Scientific is a field emission SEM designed versatile enough to image and analyze everything from traditional conductive samples to extremely non-conductive where low vacuum is required. The Thermo Scientific Apreo 2S LoVac is unique in the marketplace because it offers through-the-lens differential pumping to minimize beam spread. This positions it as a field emission SEM meeting the necessary requirements of low vacuum and high-resolution imaging (a) and as a platform for advanced EDS and EBSD analysis (b).
Upgrades to the existing Helios G4 plasma FIB-SEM instrument at CCEM to the latest Helios 5 generation (c) can only be provisioned by the manufacturer of the microscope, Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Systems for Research Corp. (SFR), as the sole Canadian distributor and service provider for electron and ion microscopes by Thermo Fisher Scientific, is the only company able to provide the systems (a, b), upgrades (c), and support (d) as required by CCEM to meet the needs of its researchers and users.
The purpose of this Advance Contract Award Notice (ACAN) is to signal McMaster University’s intention to award a contract for the above-noted goods and/or services to the following pre-selected supplier:

Prior to awarding this contract, McMaster University is providing other potential suppliers with the opportunity to demonstrate that they are capable of satisfying the requirements as per this ACAN, by submitting a Statement of Capabilities Form during the posting period.

If other potential suppliers submit a Statement of Capabilities Form that meet McMaster University’s requirements as set out in the ACAN, McMaster University may proceed to a competitive procurement process.

If no other supplier submits a Statement of Capabilities Form on or before the closing date/time, a contract may be awarded to the above-noted pre-selected supplier.
