DESCRIPTION OF PROCUREMENT
The University is conducting an RFP for six of INCUBATOR FOR INSECT REARING systems. The incubators will be used primarily to study environmental conditions that affect the developmental timing and physiology of insects, particularly monarch butterflies. As part of this research, monarch butterfly caterpillars will be stored in individual containers and reared under conditions meant to simulate the environmental cues experienced during the transition from summer to autumn (e.g., declining photoperiod, declining temperature, declining humidity, increased diurnal temperature fluctuations), which are critical for initiating the switch to migratory physiology in monarchs. This research program will also attempt to predict how the timing of this switch to migratory physiology may be impacted by ongoing climate warming; thus, a major goal will be to exposure monarch caterpillars to simulated future climate scenarios.
The procurement is anticipated to involve negotiation. An electronic auction is not anticipated.
