RFP 2021-0124 - Furnishings for Law Lounge and Cafe

The project involves the refurbishment of two large and linked student facilities in the Law Centre. The facilities are contained in Room 129, the Coffee Room, and Room 133, the Law Common Room, both situated on the north side of the Law Centre. These two very large rooms extend almost the entire the length of the Law Centre, from the main elevator on the east side to the staircase on the west side of the building. The rooms are linked and can be separated by a rarely used folding door mechanism.
The goals of the project are:
• To design and create an attractive, durable student meeting space, suitable for use by students who converse over coffee, study meet and relax.
• To retain the concept of a single Student Lounge containing two vital elements in the form of the existing café and common room.
• To ensure sufficient flexibility so that the entire room can be used for Faculty events, such as student socials, receptions with law firms and students during employment, recruitment events and especially alumni reunions.
• To re-design and remodel the existing kitchen and serving area into a single unit that is attractive, durable and functional to both the operator and the users. The area should also be suitable for serving catered food and alcohol at Faculty events.
• To ensure that portions of the food service area can be quickly and conveniently secured at the end of the working day, without impairing the use of counter space for other receptions and social events.
• To remove redundant equipment, such as the ductwork described below.
• To ensure that the design of the room, the colour scheme and the furnishings are consistent with the Scandinavian modern design of the building and the first floor MacInnis Centre.
