Description

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Province requires a vendor to provide highly purified gases, gas tank rentals, and delivery services, for use in its chemistry and molecular biology laboratories. Gas tank rentals are associated with the delivery of laboratory gases supplied by the Proponent.

The laboratories are in the O.S. Longman Building, 6909-116 Street, Edmonton, Alberta, T6H 4P2. These laboratories use chemical and molecular techniques to analyze various matrices for food safety and animal health hazards. Highly purified inert gases (such as helium or argon) are used as carrier gases to move the analyte of interest through the detection systems. Liquid nitrogen is used to store analytical samples, and carbon dioxide gas is used in backup systems for ultra-low (-80 °C) freezers in the event of a power failure. There are approximately 20 ultra-low freezers that include a carbon dioxide backup and these cylinders are rarely consumed or switched out. There are approximately 15 analytical instruments that use carrier gases in their protocols, and typically at least one LC230 of both liquid Argon and liquid Nitrogen are consumed each month. Other gases, such as highly purified air, are occasionally used in these protocols.
