Background
The Centre for Advanced Materials Joining deals with the analysis of a wide range of welding processes (laser, arc, friction, plasma) and materials (ferrous, non-ferrous), in order to improve joining quality and productivity. A number of new challenges have been encountered in joining new alloys, and the ability to combine multiple heat sources (laser, arc, resistance, or other) can enable new capabilities.
The required infrastructure will integrate at least three heat sources into an automated welding system. This will have the capability to join steel, aluminum, magnesium, stainless, and other alloys with high speed. The ability to arbitrarily apply and control the heat input from any combination of the heat sources is essential. The system will also be fully automated and have the option to monitor or control heat or the geometry of the deposited material.
