Description

1. - Statement of Requirements

1.1.1.       The Unversity of Ottawa is pleased to invite qualified proponents to submit a proposal for Vapor Sorption and Thermogravimetric Analyzers for Functional Polymers. Generally, these instruments are required for standard polymer and materials characterization. The end users will be synthesizing functional polymers, bio-based polymers, hydrogels, compostable polymers, renewable composites, etc., and will need to measure both the water uptake and thermal behavior of those materials under a range of conditions.

                The VSA should perform automated water vapor uptake measurements on small material samples (<1g, e.g., 1-5 mg) at constant relative humidity conditions (0% to 95% at least) under a controlled flowrate of air or nitrogen, and at high temperatures from 25C to at least up to 80°C, to mimic fuel cell conditions. This should be suitable for polymers both in the powder form, pellet form, and membrane form. The TGA should perform automated thermal analysis on small material samples (<1g, e.g., 5 mg) under a controlled flowrate of air or nitrogen, and at high temperatures from 25C to at least up to 1000°C. Both instruments require an autosampler.

                General Description:

                The requested Vapor Sorption Analyzer (VSA) will be capable of measuring the water uptake of polymer membranes (for fuel cells and batteries) and hydrogels in various humidity’s and temperatures in air or nitrogen. The Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) is critical for measuring the thermal properties of synthesized polymers, burning off polymer to evaluated catalyst loading, and converting polymers (PAN, lignin) to high surface area carbon, which requires high temperature (1000°C) and the option of air and nitrogen as well.

   The environment that the equipment will be placed is a regular lab at University of Ottawa, with the VSA placed on top of a marble slab to dampen vibrations.

Specifications listed in Appendix A – Technical Specifications Compliance Form of this RFP are the mandatory minimum requirements for the Vapor Sorption and Thermogravimetric Analyzers for Functional Polymers

1.1.2        Should any equipment included in a proposal be superseded by a newer model during the period of time between the award of contract and the delivery date, the successful Proponent will be required to inform the University of Ottawa of the new specifications, the newer model pricing will remain the same as what was offered in the RFP. At its sole discretion, the University of Ottawa may opt to make changes from the list of equipment by altering, adding, or deducting some equipment.
