Description

Notice is hereby given by the University of Ottawa of the intent to enter into a contract with Coherent to procure:

A high-power Titanium: Sapphire ultrafast femtosecond and picosecond laser, also capable of continuous-wave (CW) operation (Mira 900-D)
Laser control system for complete on-board diagnostics of laser and environment parameters
Automatic tuning system to seamlessly tune the laser skip-free in picosecond operation.
Integrated pump beam steering optics with multiple pump port options for easy pump alignment

These items will be integrated into a set-up with an existing Coherent Verdi 5G pump laser located in the Nanophotonics lab at the University of Ottawa. A key aspect is the system will be used routinely back and forth between fs and CW, so the translation between these two operating modes must not require major laser system disassembly and rebuild. The 2D layout, with a 3 independent laser cavities, one each for fs, ps, and CW, provides this unique ability to change operating modes without major laser system reconfiguration. All other designs require extensive and complex cavity rebuilding, and extensive, re-optimization. Only the Two Dimensional, 3 independent cavity configuration can provide this capability. In addition, the 2D configuration provides better student eye safety, as the intracavity high power laser beam is traveling only parallel to the table and never in a vertical direction. When operating in the picosecond mode, an integral component is the Gires -Tournois Interferometer (GTI) which provides the necessary compensation for picosecond operation. The laser must provide automatic feedback control within the GTI, and single-knob, skip-free wavelength tuning over a ~5nm spectral range. This servo mechanism insures uninterrupted modelocking when adjusting only the BRF micrometer position during wavelength tuning or modulation. This is exclusive to the requested laser.
PROCESS;
Suppliers who consider their equipment functional, successfully tested, readily available and fully compliant to the ACAN minimum requirements may submit in writing a statement of specifications to the contact person identified in this Notice, on or before the closing date of this Notice. In the statement of specifications, the supplier must unequivocally demonstrate how their equipment, at minimum, equals, or exceeds the stated requirements.

If no other supplier submits a statement of specifications, on or before the closing date of this Notice, the competitive requirements of the University of Ottawa will be considered having been met.
Following notification to suppliers not successful in unequivocally demonstrating that their statement of specifications equals or exceeds the requirements set out in this Notice, the contract may then be awarded to the pre-identified supplier.

INTENDED USE:

This laser will be integrated into a set-up which houses an existing pump laser (Coherent Verdi 5G) with which it must interface. Together they must form a complete system that is able to be operated seamlessly through interfacing hardware and software control systems.

The laser consists of one main item:
i) MIRA 900D V5 XW OPT 110V is a high-power Titanium: Sapphire ultrafast femtosecond and picosecond laser also capable of continuous-wave (CW) operation, including:

Kerr-lens mode-locking technology built on a temperature compensated, easy-to access baseplate providing quick and convenient femtosecond/picosecond/CW reconfiguration
System for complete on-board diagnostics of laser and environment parameters
Seamless tuning of the laser also in picosecond operation
X-wave broad tuning range mirrors
Key specifications:
- Output power > 0.75 W
- Pulsewidth < 3 ps and < 115 fs (Autocorrelation)
- Tuning range 700-1000 nm
RMS Noise: <0.1%; Measured rms in a 10 Hz to 20 MHz bandwidth.

An internal detector package is included with the Coherent Mira with following detectors and monitors: 1) a scanning F-P interferometer with an FSR of 0.5 nm to detect any CW spectral features which are displayed on the control unit to warn the user of this unwanted component in the modelocked pulse train, 2) a power Meter/fluorescence detector that has a five decade autoranging circuit is used to align the laser when changing wavelengths, optimizing conditions, cleaning or replacing optics or switching modes of operation, 3) a fast photodiode to provide an output signal to trigger other equipment. These features eliminate the need for an optical multichannel analyzer for CW spectral content detection and an external fluorescence meter for aligning the laser cavity. The system also includes a 4) humidity detector to monitor purging effectiveness when tuning in long wavelength range that are prone to the water band interference.

Supplier: Coherent Inc. (Coherent Canada Inc)
Justification:

Coherent provides the only system on the market that can switch and operate as a fs/ps pulsed laser and in continuous-wave mode, as a tunable laser in the near-infrared.
It is also designed to mate and operate seamlessly with the Coherent Verdi G5 pump laser, which we already own.
