Description

The Unversity of Ottawa is pleased to invite qualified proponents to submit a proposal for a digital oscilloscope for fiber sensing experiments. The requested digital oscilloscope is to provide a minimum of 13 GHz analog bandwidth and 80 GS/s acquisition rate. The instrument is the centerpiece for ultrahigh resolution sensing systems.

a. General Description:

A high bandwidth (>13 GHz) and high sampling rate are required for the following high-impact projects:

The random feedback optical parametric oscillator sensor (RF-OPOS): This will be the 1st concept to use RF-OPO for sensors, especially with tunable spatial resolution and location ability for static and dynamic ultrasensitive sensing, which will be enabled by the 13 GHz and 80GS/s digital oscilloscope. It will add a new class of OPO based distributed sensor. Compared with the traditional static strain or temperature fiber sensors, the proposed sensor has ultrahigh resolution with an improvement of 1000x. Geophysical research on earthquakes and volcanoes requires monitoring the earth’s crustal deformation continuously with a strain resolution on the order of nano-strains (nɛ) in static to low-frequency regions. Our RF-OPOS will have great potential as a powerful tool for geophysical research on crustal deformation monitoring and aerospace applications.

Ultra-high performance distributed sensors for eavesdropping event: The proposed research will demonstrate the 1st distributed exceptional point sensing enabled by phase matching of balanced Brillouin gain and loss simultaneously. The requested 13 GHz bandwidth with 40GS/s at four channels will enable the real-time delayed pulse to measure the phase mismatching at a 5mm spatial location for the balanced Brillouin gain and loss without Brillouin gain spectrum shifts recovery. The frequency range of the chirp pulse will cover the Brillouin gain and loss spectrum. The electrical pulse delay by digital pulse converts the frequency scanning requirement to intensity measurement, which makes ultra-sensitive dynamic sensing possible, thanks to the exceptional point detection via SBS-enhanced FWM.

b. Budget:

The University has a budget of $145,000 CAD before applicable taxes for costs associated with the purchase and implementation of a digital oscilloscope. This is including, but not limited to, integration costs, software costs, installation costs, licensing costs, maintenance costs. The University reserves the right to award a contract to a proponent who offers a solution with a total cost that is either higher, or lower, than the amount provided herein.

Mandatory Requirements:

1.Digital Oscilloscope
1.1 The instrument must have at least 13 GHz analog bandwidth and at least 4 channels
1.2 The instrument must provide a real-time waveform display and acquisition ability with at least 80 GS/s at 2 channels loaded , and at least 40 GS/s at 4 channels, to achieve spatial resolution of 5mm and at least 5 points for highest analog bandwidth.
1.3 The time acquisition duration at the highest sample rate must be at least 500 micro-second (50km fiber) for real-time demonstration
1.4 The time jitter mush at least smaller than 1% of minimum time resolution. (for example: Time jitter must be smaller than 100fs when acquisition rate is 100GS/s (10 ps time resolution))
1.5 For segment acquisition function, the equipment must have 0.5 GPts record length to have 1000 traces/s with 500000 pts/traces under 1GS/s sampling rate (time window 500 micro-second).
2.Installation and Warranty
2.1 Must include one (1) year minimum warranty on parts and labor.
2.2 Installation and training must be included.
2.3 Must be capable of providing up to 5 years of warranty.
3. Certification
3.1 All electrical components must be CSA certified or equivalent; as per the Electrical Safety Authority Recognized Certification Mark: https://esasafe.com/electrical-products/recognized-certification-marks. If any electrical components do not arrive with an acceptable certification marking, uOttawa must be allowed to open/modify the instrument as required in order to have it CSA Certified. Said inspection/modification, if required, must not void any warranty.
