BACKGROUND:
Notice is hereby given by the University of Ottawa of the intent to enter into a contract with Aspect Biosystems Ltd. to procure:

Aspect’s RX1TM Bioprinter

PROCESS:
Suppliers that consider their equipment functional, successfully tested, readily available and fully compliant to the ACAN minimum requirements may submit, in writing, a statement of specifications to the contact person identified in this Notice, on or before the closing date of this Notice. In the statement of specifications, the supplier must unequivocally demonstrate how their equipment, at minimum, equals, or exceeds the stated requirements.

If no other supplier submits a statement of specifications, on or before the closing date of this Notice, the competitive requirements of the University of Ottawa will be considered having been met. Following notification to any suppliers not successful in unequivocally demonstrating that their statement of specifications equals or exceeds the requirements set out in this Notice, the contract may then be awarded to the pre-identified supplier.

INTENDED USE:
Bioprinting technology has the potential to revolutionize the fields of tissue engineering and microdevices by allowing the fabrication of complex structural and biochemical constructs. It has gained momentum as a method to biomimic complex tissues by allowing to pattern cells, biomolecules, as well as a range of soft and rigid materials in desirable 3D composite structures. The 3D bioprinter will be fostering the development of the tissue engineering and microdevice fields at the University of Ottawa.

FUNCTIONALITY:
The equipment must conform to the following Minimum Requirements:

Microfluidic 3D bioprinting
Coaxial flow focusing for microfluidically-controlled patterning of biomaterials

2. Simultaneous printing of two or more different materials from one nozzle:
- Seamless switching between two or more materials
- Coaxial fibre printing (two different printed materials in core and shell)
3. 12 pneumatic lines:
- 6 independently-controlled pneumatic lines for material dispensing
- 6 independently-controlled pneumatic lines for valve control
4. Axis resolution: 0.5 mm (x, y, and z axes)
5. Printed fibre/filament diameter: 10 - 1500 μm
6. Coaxial fibre/filament diameters:
- OD: 250-1500 μm
- ID: 350-1500 μm
7. Minimum volume for material switching: 100 nl

Justification of Pre-Selected Supplier:
Supplier: Aspect Biosystems Ltd.

Justification:

Coaxial flow focusing and on-printhead crosslinking are required to protect cells from shear stress and curing, respectively, to maximize cell viability.
Printing structures with cell-laden perfusable hollow fibres surrounded by a single layer or multiple layers is required to pattern blood vessel-like structures.
Switching between up to four different materials in real time is required to rapidly build heterogeneous structures.

Aspect’s microfluidic bioprinting process uses coaxial flow focusing (which protects cells from shear stress) and on-printhead crosslinking (which allows control over curing), and thereby maximizes cell viability. In addition, with Aspect’s perfusion printheads, structures with cell-laden perfusable hollow fibres surrounded by a single layer or multiple layers can be created simultaneously in a single print, allowing users to pattern blood vessel-like structures. Furthermore, the microfluidic bioprinting technology enables seamless switching between different materials in real time to rapidly build heterogeneous structures.
