Description

McMaster University Technology Services (UTS) is looking at implementing a complete backup solution that addresses the following issues by this Request For Proposal:

1. Capability to replicate select backup sets to a remote storage repository/location
2. All backups need to be completed within the allotted backup windows
3. Must be a complete software, hardware, and services solution
4. Solution must have a focus on ease of use and operation by a small team
5. vCenter integration must closely track with VMware release schedule

In Summary:

100TB total frontend protected storage, with approximate year over year growth of 10%-15% for 5yrs
- (approximately 100TB yr1 ; 115TB yr2 ; 130TB yr3 ; 145TB yr4 and 160TB yr5 )
- Please include description of costing model for “out of anticipated” increases
4 weeks retention (weekly full backups on Sat/Sun , nightly incremental backups between 18:00-06:00 local time )
Approximately 1000 VMware VM image’s and 30 physical Intel architecture servers, in two primary physical campus locations that are highly connected (LAN).
Database level backups are not in scope for this RFP
Backup set storage (repository) must be outside of the server room that each of the specific assets are deployed in. (i.e.. A repository in each room, or a repository in a third location (cloud, and/or alternate campus location)
Mix of Windows and Linux (primarily RHEL) Operating Systems
Image/agentless and file/agent-based options or equivalent functionality required
Immutable option required, or equivalent functionality for Ransomware/Crypto/Backup sabotage protection
1 week (online or onsite) design, implementation, and operations training session for up to 4 staff

University Technology Services (UTS) is the central administrative IT department for McMaster University. UTS is requesting proposals for an Enterprise Server Backup and Recovery solution for a term of 5 yrs of support and maintenance, that meets the following requirements:
McMaster University is moving towards a hybrid cloud and premise infrastructure and will require a solution that could provide protection for both. The Cloud environments are developing, but currently are made up primarily of Microsoft Azure and Oracle OCI Cloud assets.
Environment consists of two primary computer rooms on the Hamilton campus of McMaster University. The rooms are highly connected with an Ethernet fabric at layer 2 and dual Fibre Channel (A and B) fabrics. Both Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks span both rooms. Solution proposals should be capable of both Ethernet and Fibre Channel as we foresee a future transition to Ethernet for data and storage networking. (See attached high-level diagram in Section 1.3 )
We anticipate the current, and short-term growth of frontend data to be protected to be 100TB initially, with approximately 10%-15% growth annually for the term (5yrs) of the RFP solution chosen. We require 4 weeks of retention, with weekly full backups and nightly incremental backups, no longer term archival at this time.
The assets for protection are made up primarily of VMware vCenter based VMs (approximately 1000 VMs), and a smaller number of physical Intel architecture servers (approximately 30) running a variety of Linux and Windows OS versions. Database backups are not in scope for this RFP.
We will require snapshot/agentless image based backups for VM’s and an agent/file based backup options for select VM’s and physical servers, or equivalent functionality. Please describe any integrations necessary with external systems (such as integration with vCenter for VM image backups, in particular any upgrade or maintenance dependencies between the proposed solution and external systems)
The backup sets must be located in a repository located in an alternate location from where the specific asset is deployed, such as; each room backing up to a repository in the other room (2 repositories), and/or a repository in a third location (cloud and/or alternate campus location). Solution must provide all hardware, storage, software, and services to meet protection, retention, and backup window requirements.
Solution must have features to provide Crypto/Ransomware/Sabotage protection, such as immutable backup sets, encryption at rest, and/or equivalent functionality.
The proposed solution should include design, implementation, and operations training for up to four staff members (onsite or online)
