NRS2024-0017 - Re-measurement of Forestry Permanent Sample Plots (PSP)

Permanent Sample Plots (PSP) have been established throughout Manitoba to collect information that provides a better understanding of how the forest grows. PSPs are assessed every five years to record changes in growth over time in natural and managed forest stands. These plots are designed to collect and analyze stand dynamics such as succession, regeneration, and mortality.  The data can illustrate changes in stand structure and stand development and can be used to develop yield and mortality curves.
 
Since PSP plots are re-measured every five years, it is essential that re-measurement is done accurately as the incremental growth for a particular time frame is necessary for growth and yield calculations. The data collected may be used by the federal government, other provincial jurisdictions, non-government organizations, industry, and educational institutions.
 
PSPs are comprised of a 12.62 m fixed-radius plot (0.05 ha) and three sub-sample plots (Figure 1).  The tree plot comprises the entire 12.62 m fixed-radius, with a metal plot post fixed in the centre (plot centre).  The sapling and regeneration plots are located 6.0 m north of plot centre, and use the same 3.99 m fixed radius boundary (0.005 ha).  The vegetation subplot is located 6.0 m south of plot centre, and has a boundary of 1 m x 1 m.

Up to 51 plots must be re-measured and evaluated. Data is collected using excel and the vendor must be able to create file geodatabase. One and half metre or less accuracy using GNSS/GPS receiver is required. Raw data must be submitted to Forestry and Peatlands Branch weekly. Forestry and Peatlands Branch will provide the vendor with in-field training day(s) before the project start. Forestry and Peatlands Branch staff will also provide feedback in relation to audits on an ongoing basis.

The work must be completed by September 30, 2024. A two week extension may be granted at Forestry and Peatlands Branch discretion.
