Bruce Power is preparing to replace the major components in Bruce B, Unit 3 – 8, as part of the Major Component Replacement (MCR) program. The Feeders of the Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS) are to be replaced along with feeder supports, feeder cabinets, all associated instrumentation, instrumentation tubing and tubing supports.
Welding operations will be required as part of the fabrication and installation of the replacement feeders. These operations will include welding performed in the fabrication shop by the feeder fabricator as well as welding performed in the field by the feeder installer.
Field welds for the installation of feeder pipe and header nozzle repairs require volumetric inspection in the field. The inspection of these welds is either critical path or near critical path work in the vault during execution. Currently, the MCR Feeder Replacement Program has assumed that Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) in lieu of Radiography Testing (RT) will be used for inspection of the feeder field welds (pipe-to-pipe and pipe-to-header nozzle welds). It is assumed that CNSC approval of ASME BPVC Code Case N-659-2 which permits the use of Ultrasonic Examination in lieu of Radiography for Weld Examination will be requested and obtained.
