Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology offers both Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting (Levels I and II) programs. Both programs are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC). Our Dental Hygiene program is a three (3)-year, Six (6) semester Ontario College Advanced Diploma program, delivered over two and one-half years. Each fall (September), approximately forty-eight (48) students are enrolled in first semester. If enrollment increases in the near future, the number of students may increase to approximately seventy-two (72) in each Fall intake. Clinically, students progress from manikins to supervised provision of self-initiated comprehensive dental hygiene care for clients.
Our Dental Assisting (Levels I and II) is one (1)-year, 2.5 semester, Ontario College Certificate program. Approximately forty (40) students are accepted in the Fall (September) intake and forty (40) for the Winter (January) intake. Consolidation of chairside dental assisting skills occurs through assisting with basic restorative procedures performed by registered dental practitioners at the Algonquin College Dental Clinic. Development of Level II dental assisting oral care skills is demonstrated in a supervised clinic setting through manikin simulations, practise on partners, and caring for child clients.
