Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology is seeking Requests for Information for the Living Wall Media Replacement. The College maintains a living wall installed in 2011 in the atrium of the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence Building (ACCE) at 1408 Woodroffe Ave in Ottawa, and it has since been a showcase of the College’s commitment to sustainable initiatives. The living wall is home to 36 individual species, these include: • Large Species, ie. Philodendron mamei- which is a large and delicate leaved plant that will require care in removal to prevent damage to the leaves; Monstera deliciosa- which may require the material around the large roots to be cut away to prevent damage to the plant; Ficus elastica- which will also require material to be cut away as these roots are delicate and prone to rot. • Vining Plants, ie. Hoya australis ‘Lisa’ & Monstera adansonii- will need careful removal of each set of roots that have attached; Passiflora edilus & Scindapsus pictus- material may need to be cut to free these vines to prevent damaging the roots. • Tuberous/Cormous Species, ie. Chlorophytum comosum- very tuberous roots that will need to be cut from the fabric in order to retain as much as possible; Alocasia cuprea- there may be small cormlets forming behind the material, care should be taken to ensure minimal cormlets are lost during the transplant. There are approximately 1850 plants distributed along 22 meters high and 6 meters wide structure totaling 1440 sq. ft.
