Description:
This Request for Tender is an invitation by Design and Construction Management, University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) on behalf of The Governing Council of the University of Toronto (the “University”) to prospective Contractors to submit tenders for Valley Land Trail as described in attached tender documentation.
The Highland Creek Valley is a defining feature of U of T Scarborough and plays an important role in providing passive and active recreational spaces for our campus and community members as well as important spaces for teaching and research while continuing to be a natural habitat for the many species native to the area. Due to the geological and physiological nature of the ravine system, with steeply valley slopes, the experience is not accessible to every user.
Providing safe and accessible trail access for all students, staff and faculty as well as the general public to experience the ravine setting is the central goal for the University’s decision to enhance the walkway linking the campus to the Highland Creek Valley land trail system.
The Valley Trail Link encompasses elevated concrete and wood decks and at-grade asphalt paved segments of trail graded at 5% or less to achieve an accessible route from the campus to the bottom of the Highland Creek valley. The pathway will make a connection to the existing asphalt trail in the valley. The work area is confined to a steep clearing in the forested valley behind the Science and Humanities Buildings of the campus.
Environmentally Significant Area surrounds the clearing and are generally off limits to construction due to ecological sensitivity. The trail works include several level rest areas, a continuous handrail, retaining structures and stone steps. Some tree removal, transplantation and restoration planting will be required in compensation tree planting at and off site location. An existing pathway and stairs are to be retained with some improvements. Low level lighting, signage and various security features will also be installed.
Environmental impact mitigation through sedimentation controls, access through the University grounds, staging, tree protection and temporary security fencing to isolate the work area from public access will be important aspects of the construction management. The contractor may also be required to meet with and/ or liaise with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and City of Toronto Urban Forestry staff.
