DESCRIPTION OF PROCUREMENT
The University is conducting an RFP for Gravity Meter for Geophysical Imaging
The Department of Earth Sciences is looking to procure a gravity meter for teaching and student research. Gravity meters measure tiny variations in Earth's pull.
Gravity measurements allow us to image Earth's subsurface at planetary scales to exploration scales and small scales. It would be used in various classes to allow students to locate underground cavities, investigate small-scale variations in Earth's gravitational field, and discuss the geoid. It would also be employed to determine depth to bedrock and variations in groundwater level at out geophysics field camp and open up opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student research.
Key requirements for the meter are ease of use in a field environment, some degree of ruggedness for example if dropped from a low height, and high resolution so it can reliably target small-scale variations expected in near-surface applications. Gravimeters that fall into this category would be based on a quartz spring, have an unclamped mass, contain Earth tide corrections in the data, repeat readings under 5 microGals, and can handle a 20 g shock.
