As we come close to the end of FY2022-2023, it is time to prepare your business for upcoming opportunities in the new fiscal year. Whether you are interested in doing business with the federal government or just provincial governments, we can help your business get started.
Before we discuss what to prepare and how to find government tenders, let’s do a quick recap on the forecasted budget at the federal and provincial levels.
Although the federal government doesn’t have signed legislation on the budget yet, the estimated expenditure for FY23-24 is $432.9 billion. Some of the offices are sending funding requirements, including the Office of Infrastructure of Canada for $7.3 billion and the Department of National Defense for $24.8 billion. Below are the provincial budget forecasts:
- Ontario: $188.4 billion
- Alberta: $63.9 billion
- British Columbia: $83.3 billion
- Quebec: $143.3 billion
What to Know to Start Bidding on Government Opportunities
Are you new to government bidding? The requirements may vary depending on which agency you want to do business with, but there are two important steps to get started:
- Register your business. Before you can start doing business with the government, you need to register your business on CanadaBuys. To help you, here’s the checklist on what information you’ll need to successfully register.
- Get your CRA or PBN number. In order for the federal government to award you with a contract, you need to have your Canada Revenue Agency business number or Procurement Business Number if you provide professional services.
Even though these steps are usually for beginners, these are also great reminders for businesses who already have experienced bidding with the government. It’s important to note that as of last year, the Government of Canada has moved on from the Buyandsell.gc.ca website to CanadaBuys as their new official procurement source.
Where To Look for Public Tenders
There are a few ways to find tenders for your business. For federal government opportunities, registering through CanadaBuys, the official procurement page of the Government of Canada, is a must for you to bid on federal solicitations.
If you are interested in doing business with both the public sector and private sector, subscribing to a tendering platform is the best way. Merx is a tendering platform where you can find hundreds of solicitations from exclusive buyers and aggregated solicitations all over the country.
You can also find solicitations from local and provincial governments who are publishing solicitations directly on Merx. Some of these governments include the Province of Manitoba and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Other public and private agencies include the Canada Post, BGIS, and the University of Toronto.
