Description

RFB to complete a two-stage aerial survey for Boreal Caribou between January 20 and March 15, 2025 in the Spirit and Swan Ranges. The first stage is a fixed-wing aircraft survey following pre-established parallel transects spaced at approximately 9.2 km intervals. Observers record observations and evidence (i.e., tracks in the snow) of the presence of caribou and other species (e.g., moose, wolves and wolverine). The second stage is the sampling by helicopter of caribou fecal pellets at feeding/cratering sites identified during the first stage aerial survey.
Scope of Work
Complete a two-stage aerial survey for Boreal Caribou between January 20 and March 15, 2025 in the Spirit and Swan Ranges.

The objective of the Project is to conduct a fecal DNA survey to collect sufficient caribou fecal pellets in the Spirit and Swan Ranges to allow the Ministry to conduct genetic analysis for the purpose of evaluating several population parameters for the Range.

The purpose is to support implementation of the Boreal Caribou Monitoring Program, a commitment included in the Conservation Agreement for Boreal Caribou entered into by Ontario and Canada in April 2022.
