Background and Purpose

McMaster University, in collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM), has a requirement for two (2) Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) Systems. The CCEM is Canada’s national facility for electron microscopy. CCEM’s mission is to provide world-leading instrumentation to its customer base, and to serve as a resource of knowledge, expertise, and infrastructure for materials analysis. The ability to use scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze samples that exhibit poor vacuum stability, or to make in situ observations of samples reacting when exposed to gases or vapours, has been identified as a growing request from CCEM’s user base. Therefore, a suitable ESEM system which can perform high resolution imaging and materials analysis while operating under low vacuum conditions is required. A second system, to be installed at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) is also required to establish similar scientific capabilities at that facility, while operating in concert with the other advanced characterization infrastructure at that centre.
The Quattro S ESEM from Thermo Fisher is the only ESEM system with a field emission source capable of high-resolution imaging at low vacuum and ESEM modes, with high pressures through the full chamber. Systems for Research Corp., as the exclusive Canadian distributor for sales and service of Thermo Fisher microscopes, are the only available supplier of the Quattro S ESEM systems.

The purpose of this Advance Contract Award Notice (ACAN) is to signal McMaster University’s intention to award a contract for the above-noted goods and/or services to the following pre-selected supplier:

Prior to awarding this contract, McMaster University is providing other potential suppliers with the opportunity to demonstrate that they are capable of satisfying the requirements as per this ACAN, by submitting a Statement of Capabilities Form during the posting period.

If other potential suppliers submit a Statement of Capabilities Form that meet McMaster University’s requirements as set out in the ACAN, McMaster University may proceed to a competitive procurement process.

If no other supplier submits a Statement of Capabilities Form on or before the closing date/time, a contract may be awarded to the above-noted pre-selected supplier.
