The National Capital Commission (NCC) is planning to relocate its office headquarters to a newly acquired building at 80 Elgin Street, Ottawa. The office building was purpose-built in 1962 to serve as the headquarters of the British High Commission in Canada.
The NCC is in the initiation phase of planning for a major retrofit and addition to the 80 Elgin building, with construction expected to begin in the summer/fall of 2023. The project will include an office fit-up and rehabilitation of approx. 7000m2 over 8 floors with a basement, and a mechanical penthouse. A new addition of ~630m2 over 3 floors is also planned - for a new total building GFA of approx. 7,630m2.
Under the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy and the Greening Government Strategy, the NCC, as a crown corporation is required to take action to improve understanding of the risks posed by the impacts of climate change to federal assets, services and operations and take action to reduce climate change risks to assets, services and operations.
As part of a series of pre-design studies, the NCC is seeking the services of a consulting firm to identify and assess potential 80 Elgin Street infrastructure and site vulnerabilities and risks, and to make design improvement recommendations in anticipation of a major retrofit and addition in the context of changing climate conditions.
