Chalk River Laboratories is a licensed nuclear science and technology research site operated by CNL under contract with AECL. Located near Chalk River, Ontario, approximately 200 km northwest of Ottawa, the CRL site is approximately 3,700 hectares in area, divided into a Built-up Area and Outer Area. The Built-up Area is about 200 acres in area and is divided into a Controlled Area, in which most radiological work takes place, and the Supervised Area, where some radiological and most non-radiological work takes place. The Outer Area is primarily used for environmental remediation and research. There are some Controlled Area islands in the Supervised Area and in the Outer Area. There are over 150 principal buildings on site, mostly located in the Built-up Area, and a population of over 2,300 employees and contractors engaged in activities ranging from scientific research and nuclear waste management, to construction and maintenance, to administration. Cleaning service is provided in about 65 of the 150 buildings, mostly in the Built-up Area but there a few buildings in the Outer Area and there are 5 office buildings in the nearby Town of Deep River housing an additional approximately 500 staff.
CNL has launched the launched the process to plan, design and construct four new facilities at its Chalk River campus which represents more than $400 million in new infrastructure. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, on behalf of the Government of Canada, is investing more than $1.2 billion to revitalize the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) and build new, world-class science facilities. Once complete, the new buildings will serve as important “enabling” facilities for the site.
Part of the site transformation effort includes plans to decommission and demolish many buildings. As a result, the buildings and square footage to be cleaned will change as new buildings become operational and old buildings are no longer used.
